Latest US DUI Statistics

pablo (16).pngDrunk driving is one of the leading causes of death for young adults in America. Though drunk driving arrests have declined in Michigan over the past decade, Michigan residents still experience high fatalities and car accidents involving drunk drivers. The latest US DUI statistics are as follows:

● Fewer people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2014 compared to 2013. 9,967 people lost their lives in 2014. 10,076 people lost their lives in 2013.

● Drunk driving costs each US adult between $500 - $800 per year and the entire US $199 billion per year.

● Alcohol impairment is determined by the amount of alcohol consumed over time.

● In 2010, more than 4 million US adults reported at least one episode of alcohol-impaired driving.

● In 2011, more than one million people in the US were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

● Males are more likely than females to drive drunk.

● More than 60% of drivers with suspended licenses continue to drive.

● One in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime.

● The US drunk driving rate is highest among young adults.

● More than a million people in the US are arrested annually for drunk driving.

● There is a drunk driving related death every hour in the US.

● Drunk driving accidents are more likely to occur at night than during the day.

Statistics show that implementing certain strategies effectively reduces instances of drunk driving. For example, setting a minimum legal drinking age of 21 has helped save thousands of lives since implementation. Sobriety checkpoints have also led to a reduction in drunk driving. Though sobriety checkpoints are illegal in Michigan, seat belt checks have resulted in fewer drunk drivers. Mass media campaigns have also contributed to a decrease of drunk driving incidents.

I have represented many Washtenaw County residents accused of drunk driving. Most of my clients are upstanding people who made the mistake of consuming one too many drinks. In many circumstances, I have been able to have their drunk driving charge reduced or completely dismissed. I have also helped my clients locate substance abuse education and treatment programs. Many people struggle with alcoholism or substance abuse and need structured counseling to overcome their addiction. Alcohol abuse is one of the leading causes of repeat drunk driving. Most people don't even realize they have an addiction until their second DUI.
