Michigan Lawmaker Arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

photodune-4431524-alcohol-xs.jpgThis past week, Michigan state Rep. John Kivela, D - Marquette, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Kivela was booked and released from Clinton County jail. His arraignment will likely occur on November 19, 2015.

Kivela is serving his second term in the House. He was the mayor of Marquette from 2008 to 2012. Prior to that, Kivela served as the general manager of a used car dealership. Kivela did release a statement regarding the arrest but did not comment as to how and where the arrest occurred:

"I am truly sorry to my wife, family and constituents for letting them down," Kivela said. "I have battled with alcoholism for most of my adult life. My dependence on alcohol has become a problem, and I plan to seek treatment immediately."

Media inquiries regarding the arrest have been directed to Grassroots Midwest. According to the bipartisan advocacy firm, Kivela will be seeking professional treatment to help him overcome his dependence on alcohol.

Alcoholism is a serious addiction to overcome. Many individuals in Washtenaw County have been charged and convicted for drunk driving due to their struggle with alcoholism. Currently, over 14 million people in the U.S. suffer from alcoholism.

In 2013, 24.6 percent of people ages 18 or older reported that they engaged in binge drinking in the past month; 6.8 percent reported that they engaged in heavy drinking in the past month.

Globally, alcohol misuse is the fifth leading risk factor for premature death and disability; among people between the ages of 15 and 49, it is the first.

More than 10 percent of U.S. children live with a parent with alcohol problems, according to a 2012 study.
