Administrative Penalties Licensed Professionals May Face for a DUI Conviction

As a licensed legal professional, I know that any type of criminal conviction may negatively impact my career. In addition to the criminal and civil consequences that can be incurred, most licensed professionals have to appear before regulatory boards to discuss their criminal conduct. Depending on your profession, your license may be suspended, revoked or forfeited for a DUI conviction. If you find yourself in this situation, it is important to obtain legal counsel and guidance on how to proceed so you can keep your professional license.

Most licensed professionals are required to report any criminal convictions they incur to their respective licensing board. For example in Michigan, most health care professionals, such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists are required to report DUI convictions to their respective licensing board. The clerk of the court entering the conviction is also obligated to report the conviction to various departments and licensing authorities. Prosecutors and attorneys in Michigan as well as some other states are also required to report criminal convictions to the respective attorney discipline board. Depending on the circumstances of the case, the discipline/licensing board may hold a formal hearing to discuss any possible consequences to impose on the licensed professional as a result of the conviction.

Hiring a DUI attorney can help you prepare the best defense possible so that you can either avoid conviction completely or minimize the negative consequences to your professional license. Though you may be concerned with how much an attorney may cost, the sanctions, fines, and penalties imposed as a result of a DUI conviction will have a longer lasting financial impact in comparison to short-term attorney fees.
