Pontoon operator alleged for drunk driving in Michigan

Many Ann Arbor, Michigan, residents are fully aware of the severe drunk driving laws in their state. These laws prohibit drivers from operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. As summer approaches; however, local residents who enjoy water-related activities should know that operating a watercraft under the influence of alcohol may have potential consequences.

Near Ann Arbor, Michigan, a 58-year-old man was recently arrested in connection with a boating incident. According to sources, the man operated a pontoon on Eagle Lake. The pontoon was full of passengers at the time, including two children.

Authorities claimed that they noticed the water vessel going the wrong way during their patrol. As a result, the pontoon operator was arrested for allegedly boating while intoxicated. He also received a citation because one of the child passengers was not wearing a life jacket. The man had a blood-alcohol content level of 0.10, which exceeds the BAC legal limit in Michigan.

Although drunk driving laws are enforced to keep everyone safe from motor-vehicle accidents, boating under the influence laws ensure that boat operators and passengers are safe on the water as well. In fact, Michigan does not tolerate boating while intoxicated and any boater who has a blood-alcohol content of 0.10 or above may face Driving While Intoxicated charges.

Boating under the influence may result in a suspended or revoked license, large fines and imprisonment. The penalties may be even more severe if a minor was aboard the boat or if the alleged DWI caused bodily harm. Ultimately, a drunk driving charge can cause negative consequences to the accused, which is why challenging the allegations with the assistance of a defense professional may be advisable.

In such a case, the knowledge of a legal professional in Michigan may be able to help the person accused of drunk driving to obtain a fair judgment or even reduced or dismissed charges.
