According to a recent review, the number of drunk driving arrests varies widely throughout the state of Michigan. The review looked at all DUI arrests and led to the finding that more arrests for DUI are made in our state in rural areas than in urban. This may be due to the fact that urban officers are more likely to be busy dealing with other crimes.
In Ann Arbor, the Michigan study found that there were 101 arrests for DUI-related offense — this from a law enforcement force with 117 officers. In contrast, the review of our state determined that a person who had been drinking and driving was much more likely to be arrested in East Lansing, where 620 arrests were made by their 54 officers. The numbers reported did not take into account arrests made by campus police.
Though the number of arrests does little to show that there is more drunk driving in one area than another, it may demonstrate that there is a greater focus on catching drunk drivers in some cities in our state than others.
Even though Ann Arbor sees fewer DUI arrests than other cities in Michigan, it does not mean they are nonexistent. Local police are trained to spot even the smallest signs that someone may be intoxicated. If you have been arrested for drunk driving, it’s important to know your rights. First, you have the right to remain silent and not talk to police. Second, you have the right to an attorney. There are ways to defend against DUI charges.
