Former Miss USA arrested for DUI in Detroit

Many people in Ann Arbor enjoy going over to a friend's house for dinner or meeting friends at a local restaurant. Sometimes, people enjoy a drink or two as they gather together. Unfortunately, sometimes people get behind the wheel after drinking. Even if a person thinks they are able to drive, that decision can end with an arrest for DUI.

The former Miss Michigan and Miss USA, Rima Fakih, was arrested in December after leaving a gathering of friends at a Detroit establishment. Fakih stated that she was concerned that some of her friends were under the influence of alcohol and that she made the decision to be the driver as they left the establishment. Police reports suggest that she was stopped for speeding, and an open bottle of champagne was found in her car. She was charged with DUI.

Like others who have been accused of DUI in Michigan, Fakih appeared in court and was given a date for a bench trial. If convicted, she could face the loss of her driver's license and jail time. She will remain out of custody until after the trial.

Reports do not state how police determined that Fakih was intoxicated nor do they reveal her blood alcohol level. These are questions that must be answered prior to any conviction for DUI. It is not unheard of for a breath test to malfunction or be improperly calibrated. Similarly, police officers may not use proper techniques when administering a field sobriety test. If either of these is found to be true, evidence may be inadmissible in court. When facing DUI charges, it is important to remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
