MegaBus driver faces drunk driving charges

Ann Arbor, Michigan, readers may remember an incident in 2008 when a MegaBus driver was arrested here for DUI. This time a MegaBus driver was arrested near Iowa City, Iowa, for drunk driving. The bus driver was carrying passengers from Chicago to Des Moines, when it was pulled over on Interstate 80 for failure to maintain a lane. A passenger related that he felt the bus swerve a few times, but did not suspect the driver of DUI. But when the bus pulled over, Iowa state troopers had the bus driver perform field sobriety tests, which the driver allegedly failed.

Police records state the driver smelled of alcohol, admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages and failed a field sobriety test, but there is no indication that a blood-alcohol test was administered. The man was placed under arrest and transported to the Johnson County Jail, presumably to await a bail hearing. He is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, second offense. MegaBus was contacted to make arrangements to get approximately 70 passengers to their destinations, which in most cases was Des Moines.

The driver is said to have been previously convicted for DUI. For its part, MegaBus said the driver had a clean employment record and that the company does an extensive background check before hiring each employee.

As for the driver, he is facing a serious legal battle. Since he was transporting so many people, prosecutors may be inclined to try to make an example out of the man. Drunk driving allegations are taken seriously in Ann Arbor and elsewhere, and the man will clearly benefit from consulting an attorney who can preserve important legal rights.
