It is a tragedy when a person is killed by a driver allegedly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Criminal charges for causing death or serious injury to others while driving under the influence have strict consequences for anyone found guilty. I have seen it all too often in and around Washtenaw County during my years of legal practice. A life has ended, families’ lives are impacted, and the driver of the vehicle also suffers. A life is lost, and that is something that will stay with him or her for the remainder of their lifetime.
A local Washtenaw County realtor, taking a late night jog on Marshall Road the night of August 5th, was struck and killed by a passing motorist. Other drivers saw the victim in a roadside ditch and immediately reported the accident to police. Although the man is said to have initially driven away from the accident, witnesses say the 42-year-old returned to the scene. He now faces charges for DUI.
A good friend of the victim stated she was glad to hear the man came back to the accident and that, “tonight he is a very, very sorry human being.”
While no further details of the accident have been released at this time, initial reports did indicate that debris indicative of an accident, such as broken glass, was located at the scene. Markings presumably left by the vehicle were also present.
It is not known yet if the driver has a history of DUI or if this was a first offense. Police did state that the driver was drunk but did not provide the level of intoxication.
It is important to remember that anyone charged with a crime has the right to be presumed innocent until proven otherwise. An attorney experienced in representing those accused of DUI and DWI in Washtenaw County may offer advice and options to be considered.
