Ann Arbor Drunk Driving Defense Lawyer

When facing drunk driving (DWI/DUI/OWI) charges, it is important to know your options and the possible punishments you are facing.

At my law firm, the law office of Stacey M. Washington, Attorney and Counselor, I provide experienced, assertive and knowledgeable representation for clients throughout Michigan. With over 30 years of practice experience and as a former City of Ann Arbor prosecutor, I have insight into how the prosecution approaches drunk driving cases. I will use this experience and legal background when structuring your drunk driving defense.

Combating The Possible Consequences Of Drinking And Driving

If you are convicted on a DUI/DWI charge, you are facing a range of consequences, including:

  • Large fines
  • Jail or prison time
  • Suspended or revoked license
  • Ignition interlock system
  • mandatory alcohol and/or drug testing
  • Inability to purchase or own a firearm
  • Loss of your CDL/Commercial Driver License
  • Loss of your job
  • a DUI conviction on your record for the rest of your life

It is important to note that the punishments for a conviction increase with the number of DWI/DUI offenses an individual accumulates. Though there may be some leniency applied in a case with a first offender, this leniency is not extended to the second or subsequent offenses. Even some first offenders are not given leniency depending on the nature of the charge.

Sobriety Court

Instead of the traditional consequences of jail time and fines for a drunk driver, one alternative is sobriety court. When appropriate, the court permits the individual to make a contract with the court to get help for his or her drinking problem. It is an intensive program for residents of Washtenaw County that requires a serious commitment and is designed to rehabilitate individuals, preventing them from becoming repeat offenders.

Heidi's Law

In Michigan, drunk driving laws are becoming stricter. One law that has recently been passed is known as Heidi's Law. This law essentially states that if you have at least two prior DUI convictions in a lifetime, subsequent DUI arrests can result in you being charged with a felony DUI/DWI for enhanced sentencing purposes.
