The Rising Increase of Parents Driving Drunk with Children in the Car

The Rising Increase of Parents Driving Drunk with Children in the Car

I recently discussed the serious criminal repercussions that may arise if parents drink and drive with their children in the car in Washtenaw County. Despite the criminal repercussions, there continues to be a gradual increase of people being arrested and charged for drunk driving with the presence of children in the car.

For instance, Brenda Conway recently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of operating while intoxicated with occupants younger than 16-years of age in Southfield, Michigan. Conway, who is also the girlfriend of Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Richard Caretti, registered an initial blood-alcohol level of 0.18% during an initial breath test. Judge Caretti was not charged in the case. He claimed that he was unaware that he knew his girlfriend was drunk.

A Kalispell woman, Jessica Dimler, recently pleaded not guilty to felony criminal child endangerment after allegedly driving drunk with her 5-month-old baby and 10-year-old son in the car. Police officers claimed that Dimler's blood-alcohol was twice the legal limit and that they found a glass of orange juice sitting in the vehicle that smelled like and tested positive for alcohol. Dimler claims that she had been in an argument with her husband so she took her children and left.

Dimler's claim regarding her domestic dispute resulting in her immediately leaving with her children correlates with some of the data I researched regarding the rising increase of women being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) report that I reviewed illustrated certain social trends common amongst female drunk drivers such as the lack of stable and supportive relationships and certain life stressors occurring immediately prior to their drunk driving offense. One of the stressors included domestic arguments, as delineated in Dimler's story. I have not found any similar social correlations between women and men driving under the influence of alcohol with children in the car.

Anti-drunk driving groups, such as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, are teaming up with public and private agencies to address the root cause of the matter and find possible solutions.
