DUI Arrests Peak Calendar Periods

DUI Arrests Peak Calendar PeriodsThough DUI checkpoints in Michigan are unconstitutional, law enforcement agencies routinely increase their patrols for drunk drivers during peak periods throughout the year, such as the 4th of July, Labor Day, or Thanksgiving eve.

For example, during the 2013 NCAA tournament, police ag encies throughout Michigan made 2,271 drunk driving arrests. This year, extra patrols occurred throughout 26 Michigan counties, including Allegan, Kalamazoo, Kent, and Muskegon counties.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the most dangerous month to drive is during August, and the most dangerous day is on Saturday. A higher number of alcohol-impaired drivers cause nearly twice the number of automotive deaths during the summertime than during the rest of the year combined.

Michigan State Police say July and August yield the most alcohol-related traffic fatalities.

Alcohol-related traffic deaths and serious injuries increase during the summer months, with July and August being the highest, according to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.

The most traveled holiday period of the year is Thanksgiving weekend, and DUI arrests are at their highest between Thanksgiving and the end of New Year's weekend. Thanksgiving eve is even referred to as "Black Wednesday," as it may be the busiest night of the year for bars. Social binge drinking (consumption of a high volume of alcohol in a short period of time) is also common at this time of year.

Remember, if you drink alcohol, do not drive. If you drive, do not drink alcohol. Call a sober driver or cab to take you home. Here is a list of agencies that provide sober/safe transportation services throughout Washtenaw County:
