Court dismisses Michigan State jock's underage drinking charges

Being convicted of drunk driving charges can have severe consequences for an Ann Arbor or Washtenaw, Michigan, resident. On the other hand, underage drinking charges can carry even more weight as they can compromise a young person's life in so many ways.

That could have been the fate of a Michigan State freshman facing underage drinking charges if not for the proper legal action. The 18-year-old man was charged after a police officer saw him on the street helping a friend. However, the freshman pleaded not guilty to the charges and they were eventually dismissed based on the recommendation of prosecutors.

A conviction could have cast a shadow on the promising football career of the 18-year-old. He was considered by a sports website to be the Number 1 football kicker before he was recruited by Michigan State. He has served as a backup to the team's senior kicker.

Michigan has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to underage drinking. That means that anyone below 21 years of age who consumes or possesses an alcoholic beverage can face charges. The state is also strict when it comes to selling and providing alcohol to minors. Charges can also escalate when a minor consumes alcohol and operates a motor vehicle. Consequences can range from license suspension, other penalties, community service or serving time in prison or a juvenile facility.

Even more than that is the blemish of a conviction that can stain a young person's reputation. The person's educational status can be compromised and in the long-run, that person's employment opportunities can be affected as well. For that reason, it would be best for an Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County resident facing charges to immediately build a solid defense. As shown in the freshman's case, the dismissal of charges is a good possibility.
