Serious penalties could await man charged with several felonies

Multiple offenses of drunk driving violations and previous Driving Under the Influence convictions may result in felony charges here in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Such charges may also lead to other serious charges if there are extenuating circumstances such as firearm possession and child support warrants, as was the case with a recent arrest made by state troopers.

State troopers recently arrested a 26-year-old man from Benton Harbor for allegedly driving drunk and carrying an AK-47 rifle in his vehicle. The man claims that he was unaware of carrying a dangerous, but otherwise unloaded, assault weapon in his vehicle. Authorities arraigned him on several felony charges, including an alleged weapon possession while intoxicated charge.

He allegedly ignored commands by state troopers to stop walking away during the chase. Police had to use a Taser to apprehend the man, who was accused of running away from officers due to an existing child support bench warrant. Allegedly, the rifle was discovered in the front passenger seat of the car after the man was arrested.

A felony DUI charge may result in a prison sentence no less than one year and a no more than five years. According to Michigan laws, a person may be charged with a felony if convicted of a third drunk driving offense. There are also potentially large fines, a loss of driving privileges and vehicle immobilization or forfeiture.

Having a felony conviction on the person's record makes that person ineligible for certain jobs, such as jobs working with children. It also prohibits the person from owning firearms and it may be difficult to secure a bank loan. A felony DUI conviction cannot be removed from a person's record in Michigan.

For that reason, a person who is charged with a felony or another DUI charge may wish to speak with a knowledgeable DUI defense attorney. Attorneys have the right training and expertise to determine the seriousness of the charges. These legal professionals can provide sound advice and assistance to the accused person, especially if that person is fighting a felony DUI charge.
