Tie one on for safety campaign launches this month

Nationwide, between Thanksgiving and Christmas last year, more than 1,000 people lost their lives in drunk-driving accidents with several thousands more sustaining serious injuries as well. Nearly equal as many were arrested and convicted of a wide variety of drunk-driving offenses.

In an effort to cut down on the number of people who not only die because of drunk-driving accidents but are arrested because of them, MADD and Michigan officers are combining efforts again this holiday season to bring awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving.

Marking its 26th anniversary, the "Tie One on for Safety" campaign was launched this month which asked drivers across the state of Michigan to display a red ribbon on their vehicle as a pledge to drive safe and sober. Last year, MADD distributed approximately 25,000 ribbons; they hope this year that they will surpass that number.

Sheriffs in counties across the state will also be stepping up patrols during the statewide DUI crackdown which is set to begin Dec. 27 and end Jan. 1. "We are emphasizing the dangers of drinking and driving during the holiday season, but we all must remember that message is just not a seasonal one, it should be a daily one," explains a Macomb County sheriff.

Officers across the state want to make it clear that drunk driving enforcement should not be taken lightly and that people who are found guilty of drunk-driving offenses can still face serious consequences. According to the director of the Michigan office of Highway Safety Planning, "The message we want to get across to Michigan residents is quite simple, that drunk driving is not tolerated in this state, detection is highly likely, arrest is a certainty and sanctions are swift and severe."
