Last night, had dinner and a movie to celebrate a friend's birthday. Nice meal at the Smokehouse. The movie was Roman Polanski's "Carnage."
Interesting premise to the movie - two sets of parents meet to discuss how one son pretty much knocked the teeth out of the other son's mouth in a playground dispute. The parents begin with a very civilized discussion that slowly degrades into what feels like a competition as to which couple can cause the most damage - carnage - to the other.
The film stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and John C. Reilly. All great actors. I love Jodie but did feel she was a bit over the top - perhaps on purpose to drive the point across about the stress of intense bickering and one-upmanship? Set in an apartment living room, Polanski managed to give the feel of New York although the movie was filmed in France. Nice cinematography and set decoration. A few humorous moments. Parents can relate to the funniest observation given by Reilly about having children late in life.
I'm not sure this should have been an entire movie. It felt more like an extended scene from a longer movie. I've been told it's similar to the Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor movie "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe." I can't say because I've never seen that movie, just clips. Maybe I'll look it up.
In any case, the company of a good friend is always worth the time.
